Swiss Tunnel Gets You to the Slopes in Half the Time
Terri June 16th, 2007
MSNBC reports that Switzerland has inaugurated a new tunnel designed to reduce traffic and get skiers to the slopes more quickly.
The Loetschberg tunnel takes passengers from Bern, at the northern end of the tunnel, to Visp, near ski regions like Switzerland’s Zermatt and Italy’s Courmayeur on the southern side of the Alps. Travel time on this route will be cut in half — from 110 minutes to 55 minutes.
The 21 mile long tunnel, which took eight years to build and cost $3.5 billion, is the longest land tunnel in the world.
Passenger trains will start using the tunnel on Dec. 9. Thereafter 72 freight trains and 43 passenger trains will pass through the tunnel every day. Read more on MSNBC
