Markets in Tuscany, Italy

Written by Terri Fogarty

One of the joys of a trip to Tuscany is visiting the markets held in the cities and little towns. There is a market held every day day of the week somewhere, and many of the people travel from town to town displaying their wares or selling their home-grown vegetables and fruits. Markets are where you can really see the the customs and day-to-day routines of the local people.

The Markets are usually held mornings between 6am and about 1:30pm. Bargaining for food items is not the custom, and do not touch the produce without permission. You can point to the item you want and let the vendor take it from there. But it could pay to ask for a discount (sconto) on clothes and other items especially if you are buying more than one item. Some towns have flea markets on Sundays. Ask at your hotel for information on that.
