About Amsterdam
During a visit to Amsterdam, capital city of The Netherlands, travelers soon discover that they’re below sea level. The series of semi-circular canals that ring the city add to the charm of the central area and the inner canals are lined with narrow houses dating from the 16th and 17th centuries. You can ogle these attractive architectural wonders while walking and exploring the tree-shaded pathways along the canals. Learn about the bustling canal culture when seated comfortably aboard a scenic barge tour or on the Museumboat, which stops near a number of major museums.
On another excursion snoop into international clothing shops and experience the antiques and craft districts with their array of jewelry and porcelain. Although a section of Amsterdam is famous for its Red Light District visitors also find the city notorious for its Eetcafes, conventional and friendly coffee shops and Bruine Cafes (Brown Cafes) traditional bars and pubs which serve excellent local and regional beers and food.
On another day enjoy street theater or walk in the footsteps of Rembrandt and other famous painters through the Jewish Quarter. Also don’t miss the daily Bloemenmarkt (Flower Market) along the Singel canal. Other historic attractions include Anne Frakhuis (Anne Frank House) with its poignant World War II story; the Begijnhof, an example of a medieval almshouse community; the Van Gogh Museum with its 200 paintings and 500 drawings that chart the artist’s intense life; and, the Vondelpark, the city’s enormous green spaces interspersed with tree, ornamental lakes and waterways, bandstand, playgrounds, rose gardens, and teahouses.
