Set along the Neckar river, Heidelberg is a legendary university town immortalized in the works of Goethe, Victor Hugo, and Mark Twain as well as in the 1950’s movie The Student Prince. A favorite with tourists for its charm, extraordinary castle and historical importance, Heidelberg welcomes more than two million visitors every year. (We recommend going in May or September for best weather and fewer tourists.)

I am traveling to Germany this fall and one of the things I plan to do is visit the little town of Teunz in Bavaria, where my grandparents lived before they came to the United States. Finding the name of the town was easy because I have copies of their marriage certificate, but I am still looking for relatives in the town.

Germany’s long history can be traced through its rich array of castles and palaces that are scattered throughout the countryside. Germany’s castles span various eras and genres and most are very well preserved. Munich is one of the most charming cities in Germany. Located in the south near the alps, it is the capital of Bavaria and the most visited city in Germany. We enjoyed our visit to Munich and are looking forward to returning. Two days is not enough time to see all there is to see.

Germany is a beautiful country with a diverse landscape and an intriguingly historic past. Since the fall of the Berlin wall, the reunification of the country has energized its citizens and provided the impetus for growth and an increased focus on tourism. Germany’s climate is mostly temperate. Extreme temperature lows and highs are rare. Winter temperatures vary from west to east, with around freezing temperatures in the west and well below freezing in the east of Germany. Summer temperatures are typically between 20°C and 30°C, with more rainfall during the summer months. So, you can see that anytime is a great time to visit this dynamic country.
