The Sparkling Snow Church in Bavaria

On Dec 28, 2011, the villagers of Mitterfirmiansreut, Germany held the grand opening of a church constructed entirely of snow and ice. The Schneekirche (Snow Church) was planned to be open for Christmas, but warm weather conditions and lack of snow made that dream an impossibility.

The Snow Church was built to commemorate a similar snow church built in the town 100 years ago.  At that time, the village did not have a church and worshipers had to travel an hour and a half to a neighboring town to attend mass. They built the church to protest their situation.

The Snow Church is is made up of more than 49,000 cubic feet of  snow and can seat 190 people. The church was blessed by a Catholic priest and will be used to hold services, but no masses or sacraments will be performed.
